Cast iron for extreme cold — PGO S.A. Śrem technology for demanding industries!

When temperatures drop, materials operate in a completely different reality. What is ductile and safe at room temperature can become brittle and prone to cracking at −40°C. That’s why in sectors where winter reliability is critical—rail, gas power, offshore, and general machinery—the choice of material is not just about quality; it’s about the safety of entire systems.

Why does this matter?

Most steels and cast irons transition from ductile to brittle behavior at low temperatures. In practice, this means that components exposed to dynamic loads (e.g., impacts) may crack instead of absorbing energy. Impact testing at sub-zero temperatures is therefore a key stage in designing components for demanding environments.

PGO Śrem rises to the challenge.

Our process engineers have developed a solution that combines high impact resistance at low temperatures with the strength parameters of EN-GJS-400-18-LT cast iron. In impact tests at −40°C, we achieved results comparable to GJS-EN-350-22LT (average 12 J, single value 9 J).

Thanks to this, components made from our cast iron operate safely in extreme winter conditions, ensuring durability and reliability wherever every detail matters.
