What are wear-resistant white cast iron castings?
Wear-resistant white cast iron castings are used in components exposed to intensive surface wear. This group of materials is classified in accordance with the PN-EN 12513 standard and includes, among others, low-alloy cast irons, nickel-chromium cast irons and high-chromium cast irons.
Their purpose is to support component operation in environments where contact with abrasive media occurs. This may include aggregate, excavated material, bulk solids or other process conditions that cause accelerated surface degradation. In such applications, both hardness and material microstructure are important.
Where is Ni-Hard cast iron used?
For the customer, Ni-Hard represents a material direction for projects in which standard cast iron grades may not provide the expected level of resistance. The final material selection should always take into account the operating environment, component geometry, type of wear, machining scope and heat treatment requirements.
What role does high-chromium cast iron play?
High-chromium cast iron is another important material group within wear-resistant white cast irons. It may be considered for components operating in demanding abrasive conditions, where part durability depends on the right combination of hardness, material structure and the requirements of the specific application.
The choice between Ni-Hard cast iron, high-chromium cast iron or another alloy cast iron should not be based solely on the material name. What matters is the analysis of how the component operates, the type of wear it is exposed to and the production process required to achieve stable parameters.
What is EN-GJS-400-18LT ductile iron?
EN-GJS-400-18LT is a ductile iron grade used in applications where impact properties at low temperatures are important. At PGO S.A. Iron Foundry, Śrem Plant, this material direction is being developed for components requiring guaranteed impact toughness in operating conditions down to −40°C.
This is a different engineering challenge than abrasion resistance. Ni-Hard cast iron and high-chromium cast iron focus on surface resistance to abrasive wear. EN-GJS-400-18LT is important where a component must maintain reliability under dynamic loads and in demanding environmental conditions.
What capabilities does PGO S.A. Iron Foundry, Śrem Plant offer?
PGO S.A. Iron Foundry, Śrem Plant manufactures grey cast iron, ductile iron and alloy cast iron castings. The plant uses automatic, semi-automatic and hand moulding technologies, which makes it possible to deliver projects of different scale, weight and geometry. Mechanical machining of castings, including rough and finish machining, is also an important part of the offer.
Quality control is also a key part of the process. The plant’s laboratory facilities include, among others, chemical analysis, metallographic testing, mechanical testing and non-destructive testing. This enables verification of material parameters and supports process stability in demanding foundry projects.

The customer gains access to a specialised foundry partner that can discuss both material properties and the entire production path. This includes casting production, mechanical machining and heat treatment processes adjusted to customer requirements and the specific application.
For applications exposed to abrasion, the key benefit is the possibility of producing castings with a guaranteed hardness of minimum 600 HV. For components operating at low temperatures, EN-GJS-400-18LT ductile iron represents a separate material direction, focused on guaranteed impact toughness down to −40°C.
